After looking at some homes in the D.C Metropolitan area, we decided to build. Problem was simply this: It's hard to find a home here with a bedroom on the first floor! That was a MUST because of Ellen. It's good exercise carrying Ellen up and down two flights of stairs, but I'm pretty tired of it, and very anxious to be in a single family home again. Anxious to be in a NEW home too.This is roughly what our home will look like. It's bigger than what we need, but it was the smallest we could find with the first floor bedroom.
Because we are building, it is easy to make adjustments to the floor plan to make life a little easier. We were able to widen some of the doorways so Ellen can get in and out with her wheelchair. We were also able to make her bathroom more accessible and we have room in the garage for a ramp.
We were hoping to find something a little closer to Reston, but we simply couldn't afford it. We would have been stuck in a town home again, or renting a 70 year old home. We are both excited to be done renting. Spencer is a bit of a "weekend warrior" when it comes to the house, and not having any projects to do is driving him crazy. He will have plenty to keep him busy once we move in....finishing the basement, building a deck, wiring for surround sound.......All things we didn't want to pay extra money for the builder to do.
The home will be completed in July/August. Just in time for school to start. Now all we need is a cool looking van with a wheelchair lift......

That is so exciting for you guys! So living in DC is kind of a permanent thing then, eh? I'm glad you'll be able to customize things for Ellen, but still sad to hear that she will be getting around in a wheelchair. I wish circumstances weren't so difficult for you guys, raising little kids is hard enough as it is when they can get around on their own. Well, I'm looking forward to seeing new home pictures and all the building progress! What's the new neighborhood like?

It looks nice. When do the get started? I think Ethan should decorate his room the way he wants to....covered in green!
